If there is one band taking 2024 by the horns, it’s Kentucky Outfit, Knocked Loose. Remaining relentless, barbaric, yet intricately emotionally expressive, the band have ceased to retreat to softer patherways- an admirable feat shown in their latest offering, ‘Don’t Reach For Me’. Embedded in a hellish sound and even grittier vocal style, the track continues to construct the hefty and unwavering foundations of their upcoming album, You Won't Go Before You’re Supposed To. The track begins with encasing drums and that signature scratchy guitar that shakes in anticipation of Garris’ entrance. Combined, these features all submit to a clear Knocked Loose identity- a prolific signature that makes them identifiable from the beginning moments, an awe-inspiring achievement that has asserted the band’s own personal brand. The track dilates between solid and blocky moments working within heavy layering, creating a warped soundscape, escaping any moments of silence or time to conjure, removing autonomy and taking the listener for a ride.

Impassioned and ruthless, Garris and Hale display their emotive and stylistic vocal prowess, that both lyrically and audibly, become a representation of the grief, direness, existentialism, wavering faith, and reconciliation that this album adopts. With a damned callout of the tracks’ namesake, the song argues a strong tone of dismissal that permeates through realms of catholic guilt to abandonment- a powerful note that sinks deep. ‘Don’t Reach For Me’ propels its instrumentals in a way that slices through, as they too are burdened with the weight of the band's profound direction, yet they still find their electric notes and exciting sensibilities. Chugging and spiraling to a decline that cements the track in all its self-assured glory, the second single from the band’s upcoming album has left my mouth agape. ‘Don’t Reach For Me’ continues to showcase Knocked Loose through a revitalized and enriched lens, and one that remains as heavy as their past. You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To, out on May 10th, is one of my most anticipated releases of the year. Words by Georgia Haskins@ghaskins2002
