“Music has no limits, borders or ages.” - Thalia.Ariadna Thalía Sodi Miranda is considered one of the most successful and influential Mexican artists in history, she is even referred to as the “Queen Of Latin Pop”. The songstress has sold over 20 million records worldwide, so it can be assumed that her quote mentioned above has incredible influence.JJ Peters is no stranger to diversifying his artistic pursuits. Whether it was his tenure as the dynamic drummer for Adelaide's metalcore luminaries I Killed The Prom Queen, his current role as the frontman and multi-instrumentalist for the adored hardcore-punk-rap outfit Deez Nuts, or even his hip-hop duo Grips & Tonic alongside New Zealand rapper Louie Knuxx (Rest In Power); Josef John W. Peters pushes his musical output beyond his distinguished limits skillfully.Around five years ago, Josef began releasing solo material separate from any of his past and current projects. Simply entitled "JJ” the musical direction still revolved around his adored rap and hip-hop motif, but it ventured into new territories such as R&B, soul, and pop. Mr. Peters’ new single ‘Chapter 1: Cupid Missed’ featuring Stray From The Path’s vocalist Drew York explores all of these listed soundscapes; although there is a majestic post-rock ambience included that casts an enchanting Explosions In The Sky virtuosity.A notable aspect of this track is that there does seem to be an earlier version from 2021. Entitled ‘Cupid Missed', it is accessible online and appears to be an “original” rendition of sorts. The earlier treatment does feature Drew also, however it portrays a more skeletal and soulful pop driven direction that is rather engaging, though it doesn't quite have that “striking” magnetism. Thankfully ‘Chapter 1: Cupid Missed’ completely overshadows it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUGPGSXi9B0Essentially the new variation, or the sequel, is superior due to its exploratory nature and excellently enhanced production. After the ethereal synth introduction, the chorus is spiritually sung with a hauntingly marvellous melody; it is to-be-frank, obnoxiously and outstandingly contagious. What amplifies its infectious capability is the atmospheric guitars and vibrant percussion that will more-than-likely cause the witnesses to shake and sway in almost involuntary reverent reciprocation. A dreamy verse follows before the catchy chorus hooks the listener in once again; it is directly after this that a brilliant and bewildering harmony takes place that could be mistaken for Matt Geise – it is remarkably Drew York though, and it is rapturous. The song then bursts into a duet for the follow-up chorus with JJ and Drew combining their honey-soaked vocal techniques, sometimes in synchronicity and other times in discordance. Dazzlingly though, the crooners are never in combat with the combination, it is charmingly co-operative and strengthens the single astonishingly. Musically, the post-rock background builds resoundingly to a climax, just like the wonders of the genre This Will Destroy You exquisitely accomplish time and time again. Then in a nearly theatrical sense, the curtains close, it is over. Some might be stunned, some might be sceptical, and some might be spellbound. Nevertheless, the heart of the matter is that this isn’t hardcore, this isn’t rapcore and honestly, this isn’t heavy in a musical sense at all. However, it is heavy with heartfelt emotion, and it just might become that anthem you need to revisit with the mood strikes.Just remember: “Music has no limits, borders or ages.”Words by Will Oakeshott@TeenWolfWill
