Human Warfare is a distinguished label run by Thy Art Is Murder's guitarist Andy Marsh. In recent years, they've signed some brilliant heavy bands to their roster (other than their own) including the likes of Fit For An Autopsy, END and a whole lot more. Human Warfare have now hooked their next artist, and they could just be the next big thing.Hurt Division are an Aussie four-piece who are launching their debut single, and it packs one helluva punch. Bursting out of the gates in 2024, the locals are premiering 'Another Kind of Me' - a track that will impress, on a few levels. For one, they have recorded a particularly high-production single that is on par with some of the biggest and best heavy music artists out there, and two - their music video delivers a remarkable quality to match.'Another Kind of Me' showcases Hurt Division's first ever offering, lending a glance to what their style might be - however they'll keep you guessing. With industrial elements blending with goth components, the Aussies channel elements of Japanese metalcore with Motionless In White-like darkness. If you're after curious, this is it.As is how we roll at Wall of Sound, we've got the band together for a quick chat on their formation, the new single and what else might be in store for 2024.Hurt Division are a brand new band for Aussie heavy-heads to sweat over. Before we get into the music, what can you share about the band, Where in our beautiful country are you from and how did you come together?Clint - Most of us live in different states to each other! I’m from the Sunshine Coast, Lowtech is in Newcastle, Miki and Theo are in Melbourne. This band came about as a result of wanting to get back to basics and really enjoy writing music again. We were all ready for a fresh start and perspective creatively. You've just signed to Human Warfare which is no mean feat. You're sitting on a roster with the likes of Thy Art Is Murder, Fit For An Autopsy, END and a whole lot more heavy talent - what was that experience like getting signed to a label of this calibre? Lowtech - When it came time to talk representation for the band, Human Warfare was number one on our list. We’ve known Andy for a long time and are very familiar with his work ethic and his business acumen. We feel very much at home and confident that Andy and co both understand and share our vision for the band.So your first ever single to unleash unto the world is "Another Kind Of Me" - it's got it all. It's industrial, it's metal, it has goth bleeding through it and it's packed with breakdowns - tell us about how this track came together.Clint - Theo and I were experimenting with some guitar pitch modulation that he had created with our previous band. We had also discussed the desire to incorporate some classic 80’s sounding synth sounds and voila! ‘Another Kind Of Me’ was born. I then continued to write with that stylistic direction in mind and eventually got in contact with Lowtech late 2022. I showed him the song and a day later he’d recorded his takes for it. He was the perfect man for the job and boy, am I glad he was keen to get stuck in.With the fusion of many genres pouring into your debut single - what would be the style you'd categorise Hurt Division as? Will we hear future tracks similar to this?Lowtech - Stylistically, I’d consider us to be a modern metal band. The 80’s / synthwave elements are a nod to an era of music we’re all quite fond of, and you’ll find us leaning more heavily into that on other tracks. For a new band with a debut single, your production quality and music video is pretty impressive - what was the vision putting it all together?Clint - Having resourceful members in the band made the whole process so much easier. Everything but the mastering was done in-house. Miki directed, filmed and produced the film clip.

Initially there were no preconceived biases or external expectations steering the creative direction and vision. It really allowed the music to explore some uncharted territory for us, but also to create a theme, a world, and an overall vision from the ground up.

The AKOM music video was an opportunity to introduce this theme (and an eager debut into 3D work for Miki), as we tease the futuristic dystopian setting and themes of class and control within the barrelling train and the “conductor”. These themes still have so much potential to be explored and make the future of Hurt Division quite exciting.I gather touring might be on the cards once you have a few tracks under your belt, can we expect any announcements of the like soon?Lowtech - Playing shows and touring is something we very much look forward to, however our approach will be considered and very much depend on the presence of an organic demand. If people want to see us we’ll play, but we will be championing quality over quantity. We discussed earlier the impressive roster you're shoulder to shoulder with - can we expect Hurt Division to sit on some big Human Warfare bands' touring bills this year? Clint - We certainly hope so, but we also realise there are no shortcuts. There is a lot more work to do to earn something like that. Our focus from the get-go was always about building a demand for our product first, then see what comes of it. We have so much more music to come in the first half of 2024 and our priority is to keep building the momentum. We can’t wait! What else does the band have in store for the monster year ahead, that is 2024?Lowtech - This year will see our focus on establishing and growing our name and our sound. No doubt this year will be huge for us, but we’re all excited and ready for what this journey holds for us. Words by Ricky Aarons (@rickysaul90)
