At Wall of Sound HQ, we're detecting a troubling presence lingering over Illyria's latest release, 'Sirens’. It suggests to us that perhaps dark and nefarious forces are at work here. On this second preview to the blackened post-metal band's forthcoming album, Wanderlust, the Perth-based, sonic necromancers have shifted from the types of ethereal soundscapes adorning lead-single 'Pragma', to invoking something primitively evil.

According to Greek mythology, the Sirens were a race of sinister beings that preyed upon the vulnerable, unsuspecting shipman. For the unfortunate souls who became ensnared by their voices, it would often mean meeting their death. The hypnotic, dance-of-death played out by 'Sirens’' opening guitar riff is eerily reminiscent of this fable. Once the sound reaches your ears, there’s little chance of escaping its alluring pull. In an almost ritualistic performance, the victim is slowly engulfed by the oppressive wall of sound bearing down upon them. And as the double-kick drums intensify, it can feel as though one is struggling against the very creature dragging them into the abyss.Wanderlust is out independently on 7th June 2024. We'll be keeping our eyes peeled, as should you.Words by Alex Burgess (@alexburgessmusic)
