Brissie Prog-Metallers Citadel Return Serve with Emotional Expedition 'Old Blood'

It's been a hot minute since we last heard from Brisbane-based progressive metal act Citadel. On top of dominating stages around Brisneyland, the five-piece have been working on new material to bestow upon the masses and today, they've unveiled their newest heartstring puller.

'Old Blood' is raw, melodic and bloody powerful. From the moment the angelic vocal performance of frontman Russell Miller commences, you can't help but be drawn into the intricate display of musicianship that follows - as Russ bares his soul recounting the story of lost relationships and starting fresh on your own accord.

This is one of those rare occurrences where you can't help but feel elevated by the journey from start to finish and along with some intricate musicianship - complete with a guitar solo and bassy breakdown section - we find Citadel bordering on opus territory. As the band's stage shows grow, I can't help but picture the sparklers going off for this one as the group go all in for the triumphant climax.

On the new track the lads share:

"Lyrically Old Blood is a negatively reflective song, but there’s an understanding of “What I see won’t always be what I get.” After asking the question “Why am I like this,” one answer you can get is that your upbringing and heritage made you who you are, and that’s not always looked upon so fondly. Old Blood’s main theme is that if you could seperate yourself from your family line and cut ties completely, would you be better?"

"Sonically, Nat was playing around with reversing some sounds and came upon a drone which is just a reversed piano chord, and then he built up from there. We wanted strong punches, stark changes and a dynamic atmosphere with a clear through line of the song's direction from start to finish.”

This is the start of a new chapter for the group, with more new music and secret squirrel plans in the works taking Citadel up to the end of the year and the start of a busy 2025.

Citadel is vocalist Russell Miller, guitarists Nat Patterson and Liam Kelly, bassist Lewis Blakey and drummer Dane Pulvirenti.
