RedHook Release New Single 'Scream 2' A Sequel to Smash Hit 'CURE 4 PSYCHO'
Keeping Australia dancing with their artillery of funky alt tunes, RedHook seem like they’ll keep the party going forever! Playing constant shows round the country, hosting emo nights in major cities and releasing bop after bop, the hype just never slows down. Regardless of their varied song styles and lyrical meanings the group retain their standard of solid writing over their whole catalogue.
Before we came into the year we took a trip with the band and became a ‘Tourist’ to the problems they struggle with behind closed doors. The single was very much in their style of hardcore punk drums, raw emotion-felt vocals and jammy picked riffs, filling any musical gaps with adrenaline pumping synths.
A theme the Sydney quintet like to pluck ideas from now and again revolves in the world of horror or the psychotic places buried in your mind. Now it feels like ‘Low Budget Horror’ is finally getting a sibling! Just like the song says we’re “dying for a sequel”. Intro, ‘Scream 2’.
A ‘No shit-taking’ riff leads off strong into a rapid-paced high hat & snare drum beat setting the tone for a very punky track! Emmy Mack stepping in with her gravely, cheeky, vocals ripping between melodic talking to screechy strains, always ready to flex her vocal mastery with every song. It wouldn’t be a RedHook song without a killer hook. Infinite catchy choruses run through this band’s combined and they never disappoint. Screaming “Hey Killer” from the top of your lungs and punching your fist in the air is the only way to make it through alive. The second verse is a sweet mix-up from its predecessor and comes in fuller with a slower flow and transitions nicely from punkier vibes to slower alternative build-ups. Remember that psychotic theme I mentioned earlier? We’ll that fits the breakdown well! Hectic screams from Emmy absolutely crush with the jammy chugs and programmed glitching sounds tight.
Now one thing RedHook are fantastic at doing is giving a lyrically dark song a different feel to the music completely. While this song feels punchy and motivating, behind the melodies come the meaning. ‘Scream 2‘ comes from the pain of surviving a narcissistic abuser and mentally dealing with the aftermath. Whether it be something in front of you or whatever is left over for them to toy with behind closed doors, just to get to you. A lot of people can relate to this situation unfortunately and it’s nice to feel some support like the band are giving you a musical hug. The lyrical play is quite fun, making references to ‘Cure 4 Psycho & ‘Jabberwocky’ almost as if carrying on their story to the newest tune. Later to be confirmed on Emmy’s Instagram tagging it as “Cure 4 Psycho 2”.
Good to see spirits are still being held high by our unhinged Sydney gang and the tunes never stop coming. There’s a lot of trauma we all bare and sometimes the best way to get it out is just to scream it at the top of your lungs.
