UPDATE: Two new shows have been announced in Melbourne and Brisbane – but if you watched the video upon release, you’d have known this as Noodles accidentally leaked them…
It’s not every day you get to sit down with two icons of the music industry, but that’s exactly what happened to this bloke when Wall Of Sound was invited to chat with The Offspring‘s Dexter Holland and Noodles while they were in the country for their one-off show in Melbourne.
Well, turns out they’re here to not only play as part of the Victorian state government’s Always Live initiative, but they’re also coming back for an Australian Headliner next year with Simple Plan!
Watch the hilarious interview or read on for the best bits and next year’s dates.
Yes, following on from their last widely popular 2022 tour with Sum 41 (and one of the most delayed tours post-covid) The Offspring performed at Melbourne’s iconic Forum last night – a show which sold out in 30 seconds believe it or not.
On the subject of the promo visit and Forum show, Noodles shared his excitement, stating,
“[We’re] just stoked to be coming down here first of all, that’s a great venue, I saw the Pixies there a couple years ago [it’s] just a really cool venue. So I think it’s gonna be a blast!”
He’s not wrong. Seeing this band in a venue of that calibre doesn’t happen very often. But, as we’ve stated, the band are using this time to promote their bigger and longer tour happening in May 2025 when they kick off proceedings in Adelaide on the 4th before stopping into Melbourne, Sydney and then wrapping up at Brisbane’s Entertainment Centre on the 14th.
However, Noodles may have sneakily revealed there’s more to come if these first shows turn out to be as popular as the last tour.
“We’re doing at least one show in Adelaide, I think two!? in Melbourne, one in Sydney and then two in Brisbane, I believe. I think that’s the way it’s set up.”
Regardless, we know the fans will turn up in droves. Conversation then turned into crunching numbers with Duane reflecting on the band’s career – 40 years since the Offspring started, 30 years since their breakout release Smash, 25 years since the release of cult-classic horror flick Idle Hands – which also stars Noodles and Dexter in a candid cameo with exceptional acting skills and a scalping to remember.
As the pair laughed about the timeline of events presented to them, Noodles opened up about the film and their inclusion, revealing:
“Idle Hands doesn’t get brought up enough in the interviews. It was a really fun film we did. Seth Green’s in it, Devon Sawa, Jessica Alba, yeah a lot of others. It’s just a fun cast, a fun horror movie a lot of tongue-in-cheek stuff, it’s really funny. It still holds up.”
After complimenting Dexter’s acting [with that infamous scalping scene], the pair shared a laugh while Holland added, “Yeah, what do they call that kind of acting? Method acting!” before touching on the inspiration he was given for his performance “I thought about, what if someone killed my cat?”
“It was really a fun experience. We were only there for three days of the shoot and it was supposed to be a high school dance, so they had the [venue] rented from 10pm to 6am. So we’d drive up there at 10 o’clock and get started. The whole process was weird ’cause they’d put a skull cap on you and then the wig goes over it and then they have to put all the guts in between the skull cap and the wig, it was crazy. [It was] raw eggs and dye. It was wild. I think it was a three hour process to get it just right, so that added to the pressure too.“
‘I think I overdid it, because I just didn’t want to underdo it” – Dexter Holland on his one take kill scene in Idle Hands.
With news circulating the interwebs that they’re set to remake Idle Hands with Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) at the helm, Dexter chimed in with “They haven’t asked us” before Noodles insisted he be included with a role reflecting his profession before getting into the music industry:
“I just want to be the janitor there to clean up the stuff off the scalp they ripped out,” he reveals, before setting up the scene and dialogue with, “I’ll just come up with my mop [and say] ‘here we go again…'”
There’ll be no going back to those early years, which were also discussed during the chat, so stop what you’re doing and jump in. Then, prepare for the ticket rush to the Offspring, touring Australia in May 2025 with Simple Plan.
Early bird pre-sale tickets on sale: Thursday 28 November @ 9am local time
