Jarring Menacing Metalcore. That's what blurted outta my head this morning when I clicked play on Melbourne band Deadskin's new song 'RATS IN THE WALLS'. The fresh as fuck track follows on from previous single 'ISOLATED' and both find themselves a spot on the band's upcoming EP A Home In The Suffering set for release on July 19th.We're met with an old school radio tuner that leads us into your A-typical metalcore intro (synth and slow-building drums) before the group EXPLODE with a ferocious in your face assault on the senses. Frontman Mitchell (Roar) Rawlings spits fire in the mic with flow reminiscent of Alpha Wolf as thre band provide him with an industrial-meets-core backing soundtrack with plenty of groove-infused throughout to have you bobbing along, arms crossed like a proud dad at a sports carnival. Intricate drum fills give 'RATS...' a killer edge and those pick-scrapes are *chef's kiss* since becoming a staple in the scene. The final act brings gutturals to the forefront as Body Prison's DanielMacdonald shares his deepest growls as Deadskin slow things down, creating an overzealous sense of dread. It's so fucking nasty, I couldn't get enough and immediately went back for seconds. On the song and collaboration, Rawlings shares with Wall Of Sound:
"'RATS IN THE WALLS', to us is the feeling of having no safety in your own home. Surrounded by entities that don't have your best interest at heart. It's a personal retelling of childhood trauma from our perspective.
With the way this song ends, it only seemed fitting our good friend Daniel Macdonald would close it out. His ferocious and full bodied vocals made it a no brainer. We didn't want to choose a name who will give us the most attention, but a vocalist who will create the most noise."
As for the band's upcoming EP, we pressed further with what to expect and it turns out that even more heaviness is still to come.
The title 'A HOME IN THE SUFFERING' could not be anymore fitting. Each track delves deep into childhood trauma and how it affects some of us today. We poured all of our negative energy into each track and are beyond proud of the result. 'Not Like U' & 'In Death' are two songs we believe will leave you unsettled.
