RedHook Find Their Release In Killer New Track, ‘Breaking Up With’
Through every release, RedHook boasts a vulnerable, heart-on-sleeve energy that reaches to audiences beyond the lyrics, making them one of the most connecting, and raw, bands within our scene. Tackling topics of mental health to breakups, the band finds no boundaries in their expression, and also no boundaries in their representation. Understanding that life is not linear, RedHook aim to cover every aspect of the journey- including healing. Their most recent track, ‘Breaking Up With’ delves back into their past bad decisions and self-wallowing, to instead show the band in a new light; one that is overcoming, changing, growing, and ready to kick-ass (literally). From the get-go, ‘Breaking Up With’ is filled with an insatiably infectious energy, housed within its blaring instrumentals - especially the much adored and incredibly unique saxophone additions! As Emmy’s honey-like vocals roll in, so too do feelings of assuredness and confidence. Articulated through the relaxed and clean state, Mack’s vocals begin to unravel the story of self-worth and growth, tracing back from anger in ‘Bad Decisions’ and deep resentment in ‘Tourist’. All culminating to a layered and high-stakes chorus, the track sees RedHook hone back into their signature style- a mix of classy tongue-in-cheek with self-reflection, gliding upon a danceable beat that entrances limb by limb into a dancing craze. After ample time for a saxophone solo, the track concludes with a head-bang-inducing assertion of victory, both lyrically and instrumentally. Overcoming the demons delved into within the past, RedHook has created an anthem for anyone wishing to rise above… or those simply seeking an amusing and exciting new tune! If that wasn't enough, the band has also collaborated with Ten Of Swords media to cultivate one of the best music videos of the year, packed to the brim with vibrancy, fanfare, and a whole lot of… wrestling? Linking up with Pro Wrestling Australia, the band has taken their metaphorical demons and personified them through slamming tackles and neck-breaking stunts (an Emmy stunt double almost missable to the untrained eye)!
I was lucky enough to head down on the day of shooting and get myself involved, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. Loaded into a sweaty industrial complex, busloads of RedHook fans donned their best ‘rock concert’ gear, and came in tow with handmade signs, ranging from inside jokes to WWE one-liners. Truly, the hardest part of the night was maintaining a cool and calm demeanour for the camera as slaps and bangs echoed through the building, and the rumbles of bodies being thrown shook the floor! The energy of the night is not merely reflected within the video but seeps out of it; just a whole bunch of people having fun, enjoying the music, and connecting with their favourite band off the screen. Although, it wasn't too hard to get the crowd to yell obscenities at ‘bad Emmy’.The outpouring of love and the time taken from the band to foster a relationship with all involved is now regarded as second nature, seeing them continue to grow their adoring fan base through genuine care and extension of expression.
