Rise Against
The Forum, Naarm/Melbourne VIC
February 4, 2024
Supports: Beerwolf

While Melbourne sweltered at 37 degrees, a sea of people feeling the heat in black entered the forum. Any Rise Against fan knows that a tiny thing like high temperatures won’t stop them from seeing the classic punk band.

First up was Sydney’s Beerwolf, who interestingly started with a cover- Inside Out’s ‘Burning Fight’. It’s a rad way to start a night filled with mayhem and moshing. The crowd goes into overdrive as the band play ‘Death of the Party’, with vocalist Pete setting the crazy energy and jumping off the kick drum throughout the set.

With punters rooted in the spots they secured early, Rise Against open with classic ‘Prayer Of The Refuge’. There are many chats between songs, with frontman Tim McIlrarth talking about how great it is to be back in Australia after five years, how excited they are to be touring with their good mates Blink 182 and working on their tenth album.

Tim explains that the band taking a break was good because songs like ‘Nowhere Generation’ (from the album of the same name – our review here) are getting their first live plays in Australia, which everyone receives ecstatically.

‘Swing Life Away’ is, of course, a gorgeous duet with Tim and the crowd. Then, he amps everyone up to the beat of the kick drum and the band rips into ‘Give It All’ – complete with Tim launching himself into the crowd. The night ends with ‘Saviour’, and the sweaty punters make their way back into the equally sweaty streets of Melbourne.
