Nominations for Australian Women in Music Awards Are Open – Including Inaugural Women in Heavy Music Category!

Australian Women in Music Awards - Heavy Metal

In celebration of International Women’s Day – we are getting behind the Australian Women in Music Awards – which today announced nominations for their 2023 ceremony are officially open.

The AWMA shines a light on the immense talent and contribution made by women working in all areas of the Australian music industry, which aims to recognise and celebrate roles and careers in leadership, production, media, artistry and advocacy.

This year, nominations are also open for the Inaugural Women in Heavy Music Category – which features our very own journo/host Ebony Story, and photographer Charlyn Cameron, alongside Crowbar Sydney booker Helena Zazlan in today’s official announcement (Photo: Peter Wallis). The category aims to recognise a female who has made contributions of outstanding significance as an artist, musician, music practitioner, agent, artist or label manager, supporter and/or advocator of Heavy Music.

On today’s inclusion of the heavy music scene, Ebony says:

“The heavy music community generally flies under the radar in Australia, and even more so the women in our scene. This is such a great opportunity for national recognition in a scene where so many women work so hard to be recognised for their passion, experience, skills, and capabilities.”

The criteria for this category may include but is not limited to the following.

The nominee will:

  • Demonstrate a breadth and depth of professional activity representing consistent high quality and reputation throughout her career
  • Have contributed to high profile and/or award-winning music outcomes which have impacted positively on the Heavy Music community
  • Have either led or contributed to positive developments, innovations, or transformation of the Heavy Music area of professional practice
  • Have been widely recognised by professional peers, employees, and/or employers to positively contribute to a safe Heavy Music workplace environment

Is your mind flooding with potential nominees? Well, all you have to do is get on board and get nominating them before nominations close on April 26th.

There are 18 categories that recognise and celebrate roles and careers in leadership, production, media, artistry and advocacy. With plenty of incredible women to choose from, we suggest starting to jot down those that come to mind, and take the time to nominate them all.

AWMA’s mission is to lead with generosity, to insist that our society benefits when musicians and those who work with them are empowered from a diversity of places, cultures and identities” ~ AWMA Founding Executive Producer Vicki Gordon

Each nominee is eligible to be nominated in 2 Award Categories. For the full list and how to nominate your potentials – click here – then stay tuned for further announcements ahead of the official celebrations in Brisbane from September 26-27.
