2023 is set to be a year full of killer new tracks, and with this comes the opportunity for standout singles. I came across QUEEN KONA, an American metalcore outfit through a seemingly average social media scroll. However, I saw that each of their band members all contribute vocals alongside instrumentals. How would this fare? I checked out latest single ‘Dreams of Calpurnia’ off their upcoming EP ALL HAIL and I was in for a treat.
This track based on the assassination of Caesar, in the words of the band is “a song with an onslaught of aggression.” Living up to that statement, QUEEN KONA tell us about this historical tale with a mix of blast beat-infused riffs and multiple vocal styles from each band member. High shrieks, low growls, mid-range screams all work together to create an aggressive and hard-hitting track complete with blasting breakdowns.
Instead of creating music with a dedicated vocalist, multiple members come together with differing styles that they’re proficient in, to create a powerful track that utilises each style so well. Importantly this doesn’t detract from the heavy instrumentals either. I’m excited to hear more, and I’ll be keeping an eye out for their upcoming EP ALL HAIL (more info coming soon).
