Start Backflipping Because Story Of The Year Return with ‘Real Life’

It’s been a bit quiet in Story of the Year camp for the past few years but allow me to quickly get you back up to speed…

In December 2017, the band released their fifth album Wolves, which was their first-ever crowd-funding venture and resulted in some of their best melodic material in years. They dropped a few videos for singles and also made a trip down under to Australia in support of it in May 2018 (Brisbane show coverage here). During the pandemic, they hosted a series of live streams for their signature albums In the Wake of DeterminationThe Black Swan and Page Avenue then said they were heading back into the studio… Well, today they’ve emerged with their first taste of new music in almost 5 years!

Real Life‘ kicks off with a familiar-sounding guitar tone (throwback to Page Avenue anyone) before frontman Dan Marsala‘s beautiful clean vocals draw us in like a warm welcoming hug. The delivery throws back to the band’s earlier work (akin to ‘Until the Day I Die‘ and ‘Take me Back‘) but his screams are also present in moments of pure emotion! This one follows suit with their melodic approach and borders on their emo/pop punk elements more than their post-hardcore roots.

Dan says of the new single:

“It evokes the same emotion and energy of Page Avenue but with a brand new and exciting feel. It’s a song about the constant struggle of making a relationship work. The ups and downs of being in love. Not every day is full of sunshine, but if you fight through the pain together, you can make it out alive with a smile on your face.”

According to lead guitarist Ryan Phillips‘ Instagram post above, the song is from their forthcoming yet-to-be-announced sixth studio album and we’re keen as heck for what else they’ve got for us! They’ve also signed with Sharptone Records too do let’s fuggin gooooo!

Ryan also states:

“Real Life is the sound of four lifelong friends re-lighting the torch and deciding they want to be a full time band again.”

Keeeeeen.
