Wall of Sound presents: “2021 YEAR IN REVIEW” – by Deadlights’ Dylan Davidson

To say Deadlights had a busy year would be an understatement with the Greyscale Records boys releasing their highly anticipated sophomore album The Uncanny Valley back in May (our review here) and bringing the mosh back to Queensland (momentarily) during their comeback show in February alongside Diamond Construct, She Cries Wolf. Headwreck and DEADNERVE (revisit that action here). It seems they certainly didn’t let COVID get in the way of their grand plans.

Now the year is coming to a close and we’re on the edge of our seats wondering what they do next, we grabbed frontman Dylan Davidson for a look back at the year that was and the music that moved him with our next edition of Wall of Sound’s Year in Review…

LAST GIG YOU PLAYED BEFORE COVID HIT (AGAIN)?

Gold Coast – Coolangatta Hotel with Polaris & Days Like These. Incredible show, high energy, great vibes, amazing crowd.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT RETURNING TO THE STAGE?

It’s a surreal but exhilarating feeling. We’ve been in a sort of waiting limbo period, like going up a chairlift at the slopes… we knew the end was in sight, and now we’re keen to fly on down that mountain at full speed.

HOW DID YOU STAY BUSY THROUGHOUT THE PAST TWO YEARS?

Well we put out our new album The Uncanny Valley in May this year, so most of 2020 and part of 2021 was writing, recording and putting together everything that goes along with that. Since release, the rest of the year has been spent in anticipation of shows returning so we can finally play these new songs we love so much. We were forced into downtime but found a way to keep busy and active.

BEST ADVICE GOING INTO 2022?

Heads up, thumbs up. We’re all ugly ducklings and life’s throwing us into oncoming traffic. You just gotta waddle along and hope the cars don’t hit ya.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2022?

Touring the dust out of this country. By the end of Feb we’ll have played 17 shows between Cairns and Perth, with no intention of slowing down after that. Plus, we’ve got some hella cool new stuff we’re putting the final touches on now. The future will be a hell of a ride.
