Stop Everything! Slipknot Have Released New Song ‘The Chapeltown Rag’

Slipknot knotfest Australia

This is not a drill. New Slipknot is here. Frontman Corey Taylor has been splashing hints recently and teasing that we might be hearing new music very soon. Well that ‘soon’ has arrived earlier than anticipated…

Earlier this week, fans came across an advertisement on the Knotfest website to a mysterious domain called The Chapeltown Rag which has what seems like snippets of a new Slipknot song – check it out for yourself. The site is meant to be an online marketplace for Slipknot NFT (or Non-fungible token for those playing at home), but it got fans in a frenzy for new music from the masked nu-metal Gods.

Since then the band have officially released ‘The Chapeltown Rag‘ in full, and it’s the first track Slipknot have unveiled since their 2019 album We Are Not Your Kind (our review here) featuring hits such as ‘Unsainted’ and ‘Solway Firth’. The five-minute track kicks in with eerie whispering vocals from Taylor, but only momentarily as Slipknot kick into IOWA mode immediately with all of their aggression and signature roots. The song captures Taylor’s cleans alongside melodic elements of the band, before shifting straight back again into chaos, which just continues to build as it evolves. New Slipknot sounds great, but what do you think – did it meet expectations?

On the new single, Corey Taylor‘s said:

It’s a punisher man. It’s classic Slipknot. And it’s frenetic. But lyrically, it’s coming from a point of talking about the various manipulations that can happen when social media meets media itself. And the different ways that these manipulations can try to pull us in different directions, in the fact that we’re all becoming addicts to it, which is very, very dangerous.”

Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan elaborated with:

“The Chapeltown Rag’ facilitates a sort of mindset that you’re going to like: it’s along the barnburner side of things.”

Both Clown and Jim Root have also said there’s new music in the bank so expect the next year to be full of more heavy hitters from our fave masked menaces!
