Let me set the scene for how I conducted this review. So, I’m tattooing this massive bloke’s back and he’s fucking struggling. He’s on his belly, doing laps of the bench I’ve got him laying on, and fuck me dead if I can’t get five solid minutes out of him before he jumps up for a stretch or sticks his head up to tell me that it hurts. He runs off for a quick piss so I check my emails and to my joyous surprise the new King Parrot EP Holed Up In The Lair has come through.

I stick the headphones in, load her up and play the bastard on high volume. ‘Banished, Flawed then Docile’, is up first and frontman Matthew ‘Youngy’ Young is screaming loud enough that I can’t hear the big fella sitting in front of me bitch and moan like a Star Wars fan at, well, anywhere! ‘Blunder to Asunder’ is a minute and a half of go fuck yourself goodness and their last song ‘Kick Up A Stink’ is a beautiful ballad filled belter with subtle nuances, a symphonic horn section, and Jesus Christ do you even know who King Parrot are???

But wait, I’m getting ahead of myself, the third track on this beaut EP is ‘Nors is Yours’ featuring Phil Anselmo. I thought Anselmo might feature more in this one, almost like he’d have a back and forth sing/scream off with Youngy, but this is a KP EP and Phil, a complete fucking legend, sits back, does some backing vocals and lets King Parrot be the stars of their own show. It’s awesome. I love it. On a side note, if you like the bass levels on Metallica’s …And Justice for All album, you’ll hate this whole damned thing. If you’ve got subwoofers on your piece of shit stereo, use the bastards!

But look, in the time it’s taken you to read this, you could have listened to this whole EP twice. The four songs combined go for less than 8 minutes and it’s so fucking good I went and bought two copies of it on Vinyl. I’ll give one to a mate. Or not. Fuck him! Get Holed Up in the Lair into ya and support a heavy as fuck act from our own backyard.
