The Final Date of the We Lost The Sea and Tangled Thoughts of Leaving tour wrapped up in Melbourne with We Lost The Sea throwing in an epic surprise to cap it off. Saturday night saw Howler in Melbourne host two of Australia’s premiere post rock bands, We Lost the Sea and Tangled Thoughts of Leaving.

Tangled Thoughts of Leaving started the night with their jazz/physcadelic infused heavy instrumentals. To a crowd that was starting to fill out the band room at Howler in Brunswick, which I should add, this was my first time seeing a band there and it is a fantastic venue. The four piece from Perth had the entire room mesmerized throughout their set with their epic guitar and keyboard driven sounds.

Sydney’s We Lost The Sea were coming off their fourth album Triumph & Disaster and they had the room almost completely full. Their cinematic and heavy guitar driven tracks filled the venue and you could feel every drum beat blast through your body. WLTS played tracks off both the latest album and their critically acclaimed Departure Songs. Just when we all thought a fantastic show was about to wrap up, Lochlan Watt, host of The Racket on Triple J and vocalist at one point or another for too many bands to list here jumped on stage to announce they were going to do a couple of old songs to finish the night for WLTS’s late vocalist Chris Torpy. For long time fans this was beyond words. I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking I’d never get to see these songs played live. Watt (who speaking of triumphs has just come from smashing out chemo) pulled the job off and did the tracks the justice that they deserved. This was probably the closest thing you could get to an original line-up.

I don’t know if this will become a regular thing, but if you were there to witness this you’ll know that you got to witness something bloody special.
