Earlier this year, Melbourne indie grunge-punk rockers BATPISS announced their one and only tour of 2019, followed by a new single titled ‘Nothing’ released just last month. These string of exclusive dates included a bunch of shows in Victoria, one in Sydney, and not one but two dates for the Northern Territory, finishing with Blacken Open Air Festival in Central Australia. While I didn’t get to go moshing in the desert, I did get to catch the boys on their maiden trip up to the Tropical Top End instead.
Despite it being the start of the Dry Season, BATPISS also ended up bringing the “cool” (I wouldn't call it cold, as it’s actually impossible to get or feel cold in Darwin) rainy weather vibes of the south up here with them. So how else to keep dry but to check out some Darwin local bands before BATPISS took to the stage. All-female group The Cracks were an interesting act to watch, where they kicked off with a really quirky song questioning why drinking is so expensive. Okaaaay then.
Self-described “bush jazzers” Horse Trank were up next, and they were a joy to witness. Their bluesy southern rock-and-roll vibes had the crowd up and dancing 3 songs in. Yep, going to a gig in Darwin will expose you to a range of different genres in one night. You kinda get a bit of everything.
BATPISS took to the stage finally, giving us a mesmerising live experience that got the whole venue up on their feet. There were some very cool vibes tonight, like when Thomy and Bones switched sides on the stage halfway through the set. You know, just to change up the stage dynamics a little. So, as a result, coming from someone who’s not usually used to this hearing this style of rock, BATPISS definitely opened my eyes and ears tonight because they played such a cool set! The guys also learnt how the Top End welcomes bands from interstate - while the rest of the country encourage shoeys on stage, we prefer to encourage encores.
Want to find out how the rest of their tour went and what BATPISS are up to for the rest of the year? Stay tuned for our interview with Thomy Sloane coming soon!
