Melbourne metalcore boys Windwaker are having an epic start to 2019. Hot off the heels from their appearance at Download Festival Melbourne (see our coverage here) comes the release of their second EP, Empire. I feel like these guys are only just getting started, and what they’ve come out with so far is just the tip of the iceberg.

Empire begins with the epic post-hardcore track ‘Reject’ and those explosive riffs have you sucked in right from the get-go. Vocalist Will King does an absolute stellar job here, transcending screams to clean, melodic vocals consistently throughout. Leading song ‘The Sitch’ is an epic single that you might have heard of lately, having just been added to Triple J rotation. This one feels a little more pop/punk to me, however it still throws down into a decent heavy breakdown.

‘Grey World’ completely does a 180 degree on us and slows down the vibe. Not for long though, as it begins a slow acoustic track, but then the drums kick in just in time for the chorus to soar into a massive post-hardcore riff-fuelled anthem. The outro leads us straight into ‘Colourless’ and this one strips the band back completely at their finest. Definitely felt some very different vibes here, not necessarily a bad thing though.

The final two tracks of Empire picks it back up in true Windwaker form. ‘Arrested’ launches us back into some seriously explosive riffs here. This one’s a headbanger for sure. Final track ‘My Empire’ is the beginning of the end of the Empire EP with some pretty cool cinematic vibes scattered throughout. I suppose you might call this one the title track of the EP, and it’s an uplifting anthem to send out to the world.

The boys leave you with the highest of hopes that they aren’t disappearing off our radar anytime soon. Windwaker deliver Empire in fine form, giving us all that we’ve loved from their debut plus show that they’re more than capable of appealing to the masses and ready to move on to bigger things. We can’t wait!
