Only three things come to mind when you think of the Top End region of Australia – crocs, that stinkin’ humidity and cyclones. The last thing you’d expect is a small, but supportive music community. Well folks, that’s exactly what I learnt this weekend when I headed to the Landmark Hotel in Palmerston (15 minutes outside of Darwin) to check out how Darwin locals Tapestry play in their hometown when they aren’t opening for Polaris.
Darwin metal upcomers, Summit (who recently released their debut EP Echoes of Aberration right HERE on Wall of Sound last August) had a small but decent sized crowd checking them out in the Landmark basement as they began their short but sweet set. Prior to this show, I did listen to their EP and actually enjoyed what I heard. Channelling some Killswitch Engage vibes here and there, a few watching were also enjoying what the band had to offer, and even made a few attempts at starting a moshpit. Metal bands can be hit-and-miss with me, but the Summit guys definitely made my hit list.
Moments before Tapestry took to the stage, the room was packed out. Not bad for a 7pm set (to be fair, it was Sunday Sessions @ the Landmark and on a long weekend, so stoke levels were pretty high!) I love the fact that songs like Sum 41’s ‘Fat Lip’ was playing on the PA and it almost felt like an Emo Night event in larger cities. The room was pumping, and as soon as the guys took to the stage, their set went off. Song after song, the crowd was into it, more and more joined each song in. Vocalist Tom Devine-Harrison loves that crowd interaction too, make way for mic pulls from the crowd (or just that one guy in general).
As I did with Summit, I also did my homework and Tapestry sound wayyyy better live than on Spotify/Apple Music/your favourite music device. I hope to see these guys jump on nationwide tours more in the future, and if they are heading to a town near you soon, be sure to hear them out.
So there you have it, there is definitely a decent AF music scene brewing in the Tropical Top End. Let’s hope more bands can survive the humidity enough to tour here soon…
