Yours and Owls Festival: Day 2
Stuart Park, Wollongong NSW
30th September, 2017
Feat: E^ST, Alex The Astronaut, Hockey Dad, Cub Sport, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and more
E^ST commenced day 2 with a very realized and tight set, flanked by a keyboard played and drummer. Surprisingly enthusiastic and strong in numbers, there was plenty of dancing and singing along suggesting that E^ST (who recently signed with Fueled By Ramen, now counting Twenty One Pilots and Panic! At The Disco as labelmates) might just be Australia’s best kept pop secret – but not for long.
With the right combination of dreamy synths, bright lights and a brilliant performance, it’s hard not to recall Cub Sport‘s accomplished live set as another highlight of the festival. Closing up with a cover Kanye West‘s ‘Ultralight Beam‘ as well as fan favorite “Come On Mess Me Up“, Cub Sport‘s equally ethereal and personable vibe was a massive hit with all watching.
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever kicked off their set in a self-assured manner, bouncing through their set of self proclaimed “tough pop/soft punk”. With the sweet addition of acoustic guitar rhythms complimenting the grunge-y overtones presented upfront, RBCF played an impressive selection of tunes from their last record Hope Downs, notably packing out the smaller stage.
Hockey Dad kicked off their set with ‘My Stride‘, (off new record Blend Inn) playing to an endless sea of fans who were more than ready to lose their shit to the bands fresh guitar rock. As one of 2018’s breakout acts (selling out multiple Enmore Theatres), Hockey Dad approached the stage with a lovable confidence, addressing the crowd like a bunch of old mates. As the sun set on Day 2 of Yours & Owls, Hockey Dad left fans wanting more than just their smash single ‘Homely Feeling‘.
