Resident Melburnians and hard rockers Fight The Sun are a three piece band seemingly determined to bring back the heavy rock of days gone by with their new Self-Titled EP. They’ve submitted their debut offering for us to listen and that’s what we’ve done. Before actually listening to it they’ve already ticked some boxes in my opinion, being a three piece… Some of the best bands are three pieces, Muse, The Police, Blink–182, you get the idea. They’re also influenced by QOTSA and Foo Fighters, two of my favourite bands and with a name as cool as Fight The Sun, I sure hope the music is fitting. Let’s see how they go…

The first song on the EP is ‘Animals’ and right off the bat, I’m hit with a very heavy riff and some great bass. A lot of rock bands hide their bassist in the background but not these guys. This track’s chorus has a very old school feel and it’s massive, I could easily see thousands of people singing “and now we live like animals” at the top of their lungs. Buckcherry would be my closest sound comparison. The drums aren’t too adventurous but they’re heavy and work really well with the bassist’s chugging guitar line and the song as a whole. As promised there’s guitar riffs and lots of them. They’re hard and heavy, cool and catchy. The song flows perfectly into the next and I want more.

The second track ‘Goodbye Gravity’ is the shortest song on the EP but also the slowest one which honestly feels like the longest. It starts with a pretty cool build-up to a chorus which (to me) just doesn’t feel big enough or hard enough. Once again the band are bringing the killer riffs and I can’t not talk about the bass, it’s just so heavy. The drums drive the track and Mars has a heavy snare that’s for sure. It does majorly pick up at the end with some awesome distorted vocals and the last 20 seconds of this song are brutal. They go downright metal and it’s great. This is one of those tracks that will be awesome for fans of that slower rock vibe but after the first track, it was just a bit of a letdown.

The third track ‘The Other Side’ really picks up the pace. It starts with a single guitar riff before the drums come in and honestly all I could hear was ‘Sabotage’ by the Beastie Boys, honestly thought he would start singing that when the beat dropped. They make great use of distorted vocals that are comparable to some early Foo Fighters stuff which is great. The bass comes and goes in this which is fine but the drums really get lost in some of the louder parts. A better mix of this track could potentially make it slightly punchier. Definitely better than ‘Goodbye Gravity’, a little repetitive but still enjoyable.

‘Unknown’ is the last track of the EP and the longest song the band has to offer. Hands down the coolest riff of the EP and more of those killer distorted vocals which are always a plus. By now it’s easy to tell that Rone is a talented bassist and lays it down great on this track, same with Mars and his tight drumming. Yet another stadium filling chorus, the very simple “you don’t speak for me” is easy for crowds to remember and sing back at the band. This track offers up a very cool ending to get your head banging and I could easily see that song being the last song on their live set list. A solid conclusion to a solid EP.

Fight The Sun offers up a solid 15 minutes of hard rock which will definitely please any hard rock fans out there looking for something new but also a little old school. A downside of this EP is it’s a little basic in its execution and cliché with its lyrics like “right now we live like animals” or in ‘Unknown’ where the big line is “You don’t speak for me” but at 15 minutes it doesn’t have quite enough time to get repetitive or grating. The mix could be better at times too, just bring forward those drums, but it’s their first EP so it’s to be expected. Overall an enjoyable way to spend 15 minutes and you should check it out. I for one will be keeping a lookout for what they do next.
