Support: Rings Around Saturn

Visiting Melbourne’s Forum Theatre for their Golden Plains sideshow, Glasgow’s Mogwai gave Melbourne fans a night to remember, performing songs from their latest record Every Country’s Sun.

Support on the night came from electronic artist Rings Around Saturn, who set the mood with a flowing mix of ambient rock sounds which he created and mix on stage at his deck. Although his performance was visually different from Mogwai’s, it was enjoyable, even as it started to fade into background noise amongst the chatter of the ever growing crowd.

The last time I saw Mogwai was at Harvest Festival on the back of 2011's Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will, which I consider to be an absolutely phenomenal collection of music. I was hoping to hear a few tracks from that album tonight, and while 'Rano Pano' was the only piece to make the set, it was a highlight, followed closely by ‘Auto Rock’ and ‘I’m Jim Morrison, I’m Dead’.

The Forum is the perfect venue for Mogwai's experimental post-rock. For those who aren't aware, there are little to no vocals in their music, which is a welcome change. It's the kind of music where you can just stand back, chill out and let their ethereal rock (and beautiful light show) just wash over you. They let their music speak for itself, it doesn’t get much better than that.
