Doug Martin – Black Rheno ‘The Start of a Cult’s End’
When we first came across Black Rheno, they had just put out their latest EP Let’s Start A Cult and a short time later it was announced they were supporting Napalm Neath on their Australian tour. From there, they’re just about to wrap up the last tour cycle of their recent release before hitting the studio for a follow up, so of course, we had to grab vocalist Doug Martin before they disappeared into the dark abyss of recording…
Legend, thanks for the chat and CONGRATS on the new EP Let’s Start A Cult, for those who haven’t heard it yet, what’s it sound like?
Thank you very much! Let’s Start a Cult is certainly a bit different, we all have come from slightly different music styles whether it be general taste or other bands we have played in. There’s a noticeable shift in heavy sub-genres on the EP which I think is pretty neat!
One minute you’ll be smashed in the face with blast beats, intimidating vocals and grinding guitars then be seduced with slower heavy groove riffs and funky arse drum rhythms!
On the topic of Cults, If you really had your own what’s 3 rules you’d have in place?
1 – Tuesday’s are for tacos
2 – Never use the same towel twice (unless washed)
3 – You must come to your local Black Rheno show, partake in friendly banter, partying and high-fives.
You’re no strangers to the touring circuit, how was touring with Napalm Death recently?
That one was pretty insane! Going around AUS playing crazy venues with Napalm, Brujeria and Lock-up was a massive career highlight for all of us. Was great touring with those guys that have been around for yonks and still smashing it as hard as they always do and the crowds at every show were as crazy as usual!
How will The Final Cult tour differ from those shows?
Yes, touring around with huge national and international bands is a tonne o fun. But doing our own headlining shows all around Aus, meeting all the different awesome bands and people is still as much fun! We love it! Plus it’s the last tour running of our EP before hitting the studio for the new album so it’s pretty special.
Speaking about the album, hows that coming along?
It’s coming along great! Working hard on a bunch of new tracks with great people involved which are heavy and groovy as fuck! Not telling you too much though!!!
Tease. Looking forward to the upcoming tour. If you want to see a great heavy band from Sydney that you may not have known existed yet, check out Black Rheno on tour from March 2nd.
