The Rat Soup or T.R.S is a quartet of misfits out of Margaret River or nearby (I’m guessing), hailing from the gem of a little record label, affectionately known as Beerfridge Records. The label has produced some stellar underground albums over the years, built a cult following around the area including the band from the same name, Beerfridge, just to name one. T.R.S are in a similar vein, skate punk thrash, not necessarily in that order. If it’s fast, if it’s funny as fuck, they are onto it and the bands second album, Reset the Ratt Trap is one of those beautiful things wrapped into a 19-minute mind fuck that will get your head banging and your skateboard pulling off or at least attempting some sick ollies.
Its clear where this band derive their inspiration from, think Iron Reagan or even old school S.O.D (Stormtroopers of Death). They play fast and in your face but not like that over the top hardcore/grindcore shit where you can’t understand any of the fucking words. Here and there they’ll add movie lines or sound affects to add to the finger bleeding thrash riffs. Vocalist, Karl Ost is charismatic and comical and when the need arises can chuck in a scream or deathly growl just for the fucking sake of it.
“It’s 40 degrees and your wearing long sleeves, no tattoos below your neck yet”, kicks off the track “Going to the Hardcore Show in Mum’s Mini Van”, you get the picture. These guys tell the truth like no other band (actually maybe Frenzal Rhomb do the same?), reliving the tales of thrash for the punk devotees around Australia with absolutely no fucks given for what you say in return. They’ll probably not even read this review, fuck the media right! I get it.
Punkx ‘till death with a don’t give a fuck attitude recorded on record. The longest song runs, 1 minute, 41 seconds, a little diddy entitled, ‘Land of Corruption Down Under’, a beautiful story of Channel 7 manipulation of the media.
Enough said. Search and find this album, or hit them up on their Facebook page and beg and plead with them to post you the hard copy.
