Someone performed Slipknot on The Voice and did a pretty good fuckin’ job!

Firstly let me start by saying I in no way shape or form endorse The Voice tv show. After years of having to watch it for work (as a breakfast radio announcer) I’ve come to realise the show is merely to inflate the egos and resurrect the dead careers of the coaches/mentors who attempt to ‘help’ wanna-be singers crack it in the big leagues. The evidence is there enough with NOT ONE SINGLE WINNER from the Australian version having a successful career following their win, yet the coaches all have had terrific album sales and sold out tours following.. coincidence? I think not!

Anyway, now that’s out of the way it’s time to turn your attention to Season 6 of Finland’s version of the show where contestant Jani Korpela gave a pretty great rendition of Slipknot‘s ‘Psychosocial‘ which not only wowed the coaches, but also managed to get one of them to turn their seat around thus meaning metal finally prevailed on a show where pop acts usually get all the attention.

The coach who turned his seat around is Michael Monroe, vocalist for glam punk rock band Hanoi Rocks and former host of Finland MTV’s Headbangers Ball, so when it comes to heavy rock, he knows a thing or two, but it appears Jani isn’t a stranger to the heavy metal/hardcore scene over there. Fronting metalcore band Red Raven Down who released a new song a month before their front-man’s performance on the show, it would seem the band have used their singer’s new found fame as a way to get their name out across the world (and it worked didn’t it). With fellow metal bands like Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Lordi and love metallers HIM, it looks like the heavier acts are finding new and inventive ways to make the genre known over there and hey, if it works as well as it has it’s definitely a goer

Jani went on to perform Cheap Trick‘s ‘Surrender‘ during the battle rounds (for those who haven’t seen the show, two contestants from a team share singing duties of a song chosen by the coach, the person who performed it best progresses forward in the competition, the loser is eliminated). Unfortunately that’s as far as the little metal singer managed to progress, not that he needed the show to succeed as a musician though! Take a look at the band’s music and wrap your ears around Finland’s latest metal  export.
