The heavy music scene in Australia is at it’s absolute best right now with acts such as King Parrot and Parkway Drive making waves across the globe and putting the scene on the map and another band who are destined to do the exact same thing will be Melbourne’s High Tension. There is no other way to explain these guys except for an “absolute assault on your senses and a complete brutal massacre on your eardrums” when you see them live.
But what makes them stand out from the rest and catch fans eyes (and ears) when they hit the stage? Not only is it the heavy combination of bassist Matt Weston, drummer Damian Coward and Mike Deslandes on guitar but the illusively demon-lik vocals of the impressively talented Karina Utomo fronting the band. Don’t be fooled by her small stature and apearance, when this woman grabs the mic she completely transforms into one of the best front-women our country has to offer in the heavy music scene. I don’t know what it is about her that keeps me going back for more, maybe it’s because I never believed I could witness such a sound coming from someone like Karina.
We were lucky enough to sit down with Karina following their performance with Cancer Bats and an insight into her life and musical abilities because, like a lot of fans would want to know, how can such ferocious scream/growl come from her vocal chords and how does she do it (surprisingly it’s easier than you’d expect) and following the band’s release of their latest album “Bully” we discuss what’s next for the band, which includes additional vocals from newly joined member Mike Deslandes who took over the axe reigns from Ash Pegram earlier this year.
Make no mistake, High Tension are definitely going places and you need to see these guys to actually believe any of the words coming from my mouth. Jump on board because trust us, you will not regret it. Our boy Plugga reviewed their album back in July, check it out here and see what all the fuss is about.
Until next time, rock the fuck out
